CBI arrests CGST Additional Commissioner & Superintendent in Raigad, Maharashtra, for an alleged ₹40 lakh bribery case involving a stone quarrying firm.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended an Additional Commissioner of Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST), a CGST Superintendent, and a third individual in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. This action follows an investigation into alleged corruption within the tax administration.

These arrests are connected to an alleged ₹40-lakh bribery scheme, which was uncovered following specific allegations. The case details a demand made by a superintendent from a local business entity.

Unpacking the Bribery Allegation

The investigation began with a reported demand for ₹1 crore from a stone quarrying firm. This substantial sum was allegedly sought to resolve the firm’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) liability, indicating a misuse of official position.

After initial demands, the amount was reportedly negotiated down to ₹40 lakh. This reduced figure became the basis for the subsequent sting operation by the CBI.

  • A private individual was successfully intercepted while accepting the bribe payment. This individual acted on behalf of the implicated CGST officials.
  • Following this interception, the involved CGST officials acknowledged their role in the acceptance of the bribe.

Evidence and Ongoing Legal Steps

Subsequent searches conducted at the residences and premises of the accused individuals yielded significant material evidence. These findings further supported the allegations of illicit financial gains.

  • Recovered assets included ₹43 lakh in cash.
  • Approximately ₹90 lakh worth of jewellery and various other valuables were also seized by the authorities during these searches.

All three individuals implicated in this bribery case are currently undergoing legal proceedings. They have been presented before the court to address the serious charges against them.
