Fintech leader Cashfree Payments introduces AI agents, Relay, to automate payment operations and reclaim an estimated ₹20,000 crore in lost merchant GMV.

Cashfree Payments has introduced AI agents, named Relay, designed to automate merchant payment operations. This strategic launch aims to recover an estimated ₹20,000 crore in lost Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) for businesses.

Relay specifically targets critical payment friction points, proactively engaging customers. This includes resolving issues like abandoned shopping carts and retrying failed payments.

The AI agents also confirm cash-on-delivery orders, manage failed subscriptions, and efficiently handle payment disputes. This comprehensive approach seeks to streamline merchant workflows significantly.

The company states these AI agents can drastically cut the time small and medium businesses (SMBs) spend on payment-related tasks. Operations that typically consume 60 hours a week could be reduced to just 45 minutes.

Initially, the Relay service is offered free of charge. Cashfree Payments plans to transition to an outcome-based pricing model, with charges determined by metrics like converted e-commerce carts and successfully resolved disputes.

This initiative represents a strategic move by Cashfree to diversify its revenue streams beyond traditional payment processing. The firm confirmed that merchant transaction data remains within its infrastructure and is not shared with external AI providers, addressing a key security concern.
