BSE issues advisory on new Closing Auction Session (CAS) framework. Crucial for stock prices, Sensex, and derivatives settlement. Learn the new timings and order rules.
The (BSE) has issued an advisory urging investors and trading members to understand its new Closing Auction Session (CAS) framework in the equity segment. This revised mechanism is critical for determining the closing prices of stocks, benchmark indices like the BSE Sensex, and the settlement of derivative contracts.
Understanding the New Closing Auction Session
Implemented following circulars from **SEBI** and **BSE** in January 2026, the CAS operates as a market-driven price discovery process. It specifically applies to stocks that have associated derivative contracts.
The session commences daily at **3:20 p.m.**, after the conclusion of regular trading hours. It concludes at a random time between **3:28 p.m.** and **3:30 p.m.** to prevent manipulation.
Order placement during the CAS follows a structured approach:
During the initial **five minutes**, both market and limit orders are accepted. Subsequently, only limit orders can be placed for the remainder of the auction period.
The BSE continuously provides indicative equilibrium prices for securities. It also displays indicative closing values for indices, offering transparency into supply and demand dynamics for market participants.
Why Closing Prices Matter for Derivatives
Closing prices derived from the CAS play a fundamental role in the derivatives market, impacting various aspects of trading and settlement. These prices are directly used for daily mark-to-market settlements of derivative contracts.
Furthermore, closing prices determine the final settlement obligations on expiry day for all derivative instruments. For options traders, these values are crucial for ascertaining whether contracts expire **in-the-money**, **at-the-money**, or **out-of-the-money**.
The exchange emphasized that all investor types—including **retail**, **institutional**, **proprietary traders**, and **market makers**—can participate. Increased engagement is expected to enhance the efficiency and transparency of the closing price discovery process.
BSE’s Call to Trading Members
The advisory from BSE includes specific directives for trading members to ensure effective implementation and understanding of the CAS framework. Brokers are urged to encourage broader participation in this session.
Key responsibilities highlighted for trading members include:
Prominently displaying indicative equilibrium prices and index values on their trading platforms to aid client decisions.
Facilitating smart order routing across various exchanges to optimize execution for their clients.
Educating clients about the operational details of the CAS framework to promote informed engagement.
Disseminating the advisory to all clients and associated persons to ensure widespread awareness of the new rules.
By fostering greater understanding and participation in the Closing Auction Session, the BSE aims to solidify a transparent and efficient mechanism for price discovery. This move is intended to bolster the integrity of closing prices, particularly for the intricate derivatives market.
