BRICS Summit Skyrockets Delhi Hotel Rates to Six Figures

By Business DeskBRICS Summit Skyrockets Delhi Hotel Rates to Six Figures

Delhi’s luxury hotels face extreme shortages and six-figure rates during the BRICS Summit (Sept 11-13), impacting availability and driving up prices.

Delhi’s luxury hotel market is experiencing a significant room shortage and a sharp surge in prices as the BRICS Summit approaches. Some high-end properties are now quoting six-figure rates per night, reflecting intense demand for accommodation.

Several prominent hotels, including Taj Mahal, Taj Palace, and The Leela Palace New Delhi, reported no availability for the key dates of September 11-13. The Oberoi, New Delhi, was also largely booked during this period.

Key Hotel Market Indicators

  • Dates of peak demand: September 11-13
  • Geopolitical event dates: September 12-13
  • Average room rates for September: Increased by more than 25% year-on-year

The intense demand stems from the two-day geopolitical event compressing accommodation needs over several days, as delegates and visitors extend their stays. This demand is particularly concentrated in central Delhi, where luxury hotel inventory is limited.

Nikhil Sharma, Managing Director & COO, South Asia, Radisson Hotel Group, confirmed a substantial increase in average room rates for September. He noted that the BRICS Summit is a primary driver behind this heightened demand and shorter booking windows.

Impact on Travelers and the Industry

Tourists, business travelers, and families with pre-planned trips are facing substantially higher costs. Many are compelled to pay a premium, seek hotels outside central Delhi, adjust their travel dates, or opt for more affordable lodging options.

For the Indian hotel industry, such large international and domestic events are vital. These events help leverage events-led and domestic travel to offset challenging periods for international travel, especially amidst global geopolitical tensions.

The concentration of demand in the upper end of the market highlights the strategic importance of MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) segments. Hotel tariffs and availability remain dynamic, subject to rapid changes based on market conditions.
