BlackRock Files for ETF Share Classes on 5 Active Funds
By Business Desk
BlackRock files with the SEC to add ETF share classes to five active mutual funds managing $55 billion, bridging active strategies with iShares.
BlackRock has submitted registration statements to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to introduce ETF share classes for five of its existing active mutual funds. This strategic move aims to combine established active investment strategies with the infrastructure of the iShares platform.
The Five Funds And Combined Assets
The filing covers five distinct active portfolios that collectively manage significant capital under the firm’s management. Elise Terry, Co-Head of the Americas for Global Product Solutions and Head of Americas iShares at BlackRock, stated that the firm aims to meet investor demand for vehicles aligning with specific preferences.
The specific funds included in the registration statements are:
BlackRock High Yield Portfolio
BlackRock Strategic Municipal Opportunities Fund
BlackRock California Municipal Opportunities Fund
BlackRock New York Municipal Opportunities Fund
BlackRock Equity Dividend Fund
Combined, these five strategies manage approximately $55 billion in assets as of August 31, 2026.
Mechanisms And Investor Impact
Should these new ETF share classes be launched, they would be traded on an exchange while remaining invested in the same underlying portfolio as the existing mutual fund share classes. BlackRock clarified that this structure would not constitute a separately managed strategy.
Existing mutual fund shareholders will not be required to move their investments if the ETF share classes are launched. The initiative provides investors with the benefits of the ETF wrapper, such as potential tax efficiencies and trading flexibility, while preserving access to the underlying portfolio and expertise.
Scale In The Active ETF Space
As of August 31, 2026, the iShares division ranks as the third-largest active ETF issuer globally. The platform manages approximately $190 billion, reflecting over two decades of involvement in the exchange-traded fund space.
