BITS Pilani’s Work-Integrated Learning Programmes (WILP) awarded degrees to a record 15,153 working professionals, showcasing a new era of career advancement and upskilling in India.

BITS Pilani recently celebrated a milestone, awarding degrees to a record 15,153 working professionals through its Work-Integrated Learning Programmes (WILP). This achievement highlights a significant shift in how individuals are approaching higher education and career growth today.

Key Program Insights

The latest graduating class from WILP reveals several important trends in India’s upskilling landscape:

  • A total of 15,153 working professionals received degrees.
  • 35% focused on core engineering, addressing crucial talent gaps in manufacturing and automotive hardware.
  • 46% enrolled in AI/ML and data science programs, though some mid-career professionals faced challenges with advanced mathematics.
  • The cohort notably included 30% women, 167 medical doctors, and 60 defense personnel.

Prof PB Venkataraman, dean of BITS Pilani WILP, explained that taking career breaks for master’s degrees is becoming less viable. Financial risks and the rapid pace of industry changes, especially in areas like electric vehicles (EVs) and artificial intelligence (AI), demand continuous learning. This model directly addresses those modern workplace challenges.

How WILP Transforms Learning

Unlike typical online courses, WILP embeds degree-level education directly into a professional’s full-time job. These programs offer BTech, MTech, and MBA degrees with the same academic rigor as on-campus BITS Pilani courses.

A crucial element is employer sponsorship, with over 540 companies actively supporting their employees. Major players like Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki are among those providing internal workplace mentors for participants.

  • Students apply daily company assignments to solve real operational challenges.
  • They gain 24/7 access to 121 virtual labs and 25 remote physical labs.
  • Specialized physical centers exist, such as EV and SDV labs in Pune, automotive electronics labs in Chennai, and smart manufacturing units in Bengaluru.

This approach offers a clear path for career advancement, particularly for diploma holders or young engineers. Someone with a diploma and two years of work experience can earn a full degree over seven semesters without needing an unpaid sabbatical.

The success of the ‘earn while you learn’ model demonstrates a significant evolution in corporate India. Learning and earning are no longer separate stages but integrated, parallel aspects of continuous professional development.
