By ThePip DeskAmit Shah: Urban Co-op Banks Need Tech & Transparency

Union Minister Amit Shah urges urban cooperative banks to adopt technology and transparency, emphasizing NUCFDC affiliation for sector growth and customer prosperity.

Union Minister Amit Shah urged urban cooperative banks across India to adopt technology, enhance transparency, and modernize customer services, highlighting these steps as crucial for their competitiveness and growth. Speaking at the inauguration of the National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corporation’s (NUCFDC) new Mumbai office, Shah also called for all banks to affiliate with the NUCFDC within one year.

Shah underscored that fostering customer prosperity is fundamental to the banks’ overall expansion. He articulated this vision as extending the principle of “cooperation to prosperity” beyond mere financial strength to encompass the well-being of customers.

Driving Modernization and Trust

The Union Minister also addressed the critical need to bridge any perception gap between urban cooperative banks and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He acknowledged the RBI’s role in safeguarding depositors’ money.

However, Shah stressed that banks themselves must concentrate on improving governance frameworks, integrating advanced technology solutions, and refining customer-centric services to meet modern expectations.

NUCFDC’s Role in Sector Strengthening

The NUCFDC, which has received approval from the Reserve Bank of India, operates as a self-regulatory body headquartered in Mumbai. Its primary objective is to fortify the cooperative banking sector through various support mechanisms.

  • It provides crucial capital assistance to member banks.
  • It offers essential IT infrastructure to modernize operations.
  • It ensures liquidity support, stabilizing financial positions.

Shah revealed that a significant number of institutions have already recognized the benefits of this apex organization. Approximately 690 of the nearly 1,400 urban cooperative banks have joined the NUCFDC thus far.

The call for universal membership within a year aims to consolidate the sector, ensuring a unified approach to growth and regulatory compliance for all urban cooperative banks.
