UPI completes 10 years, revolutionizing India’s digital payments with a staggering 13,000-fold surge in transaction volume. Explore the transformation.

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has completed a decade, fundamentally reshaping India’s digital payments landscape since its launch on August 25, 2016.

Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulation, UPI functions as a critical component of India’s digital public infrastructure. It facilitates real-time peer-to-peer (P2P) and peer-to-merchant (P2M) transactions.

UPI’s Decade of Digital Transformation

Annual UPI transaction volume surged from 1.78 crore in FY2016-17 to over 24,162 crore in FY2025-26, marking an almost 13,000-fold increase. Transaction value simultaneously rose over 4,000-fold, reaching approximately ₹314 lakh crore by FY2025-26.

In July 2026, monthly transactions reached a record 2,366 crore, valued at about ₹29.88 lakh crore. The number of banks live on UPI expanded significantly from 44 in FY2016-17 to 741 by July 2026, enhancing interoperability.

Expanding Utility and Ecosystem

UPI’s functionality has diversified significantly, integrating into various aspects of financial management beyond basic transfers, supporting a broader range of financial activities.

Everyday retail payments heavily utilize UPI; P2M transactions constitute 63% of total UPI volume. Notably, 86% of these P2M transactions in FY2026 were below ₹500.

For larger personal transfers, P2P transactions account for 71% of total UPI value. While 59% of these P2P transactions were under ₹500, a substantial 41% exceeded this amount.

Recurring payments are enabled through UPI AutoPay and UPI Mandates, introduced with UPI 2.0. These features facilitate automated payments for subscriptions, utility bills, insurance premiums, SIPs, and EMIs.

Credit integration arrived in 2023 with the launch of ‘Credit Line on UPI,’ allowing users to link pre-sanctioned bank credit lines. This also includes the integration of credit cards with UPI, diversifying digital payment options.

Predefined transaction limits are managed by UPI Circle, introduced in 2024. This feature permits primary users to authorize secondary users with specific transaction limits on their bank accounts, expanding access for groups like families.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recognized UPI as the world’s largest real-time payment system by transaction volume as of 2025. It accounts for nearly 49% of global real-time payment transactions.
