The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), launched on August 25, 2016, has completed a decade, fundamentally reshaping India’s digital payments landscape. This platform, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has driven an extraordinary surge in usage and financial inclusion.

Key Growth Metrics (FY17-FY26)

  • Annual transaction volume increased from 1.78 crore in FY17 to over 24,162 crore by FY26, representing an almost 13,000-fold surge.
  • Transaction value soared from ₹7,000 crore to approximately ₹314 lakh crore during the same period.
  • Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for transaction volume was 188%, while value grew at 155% CAGR.
  • Banking participation expanded from 44 banks in FY17 to 703 banks by FY26, encompassing various bank types.

Fiscal Year 2026 recorded significant monthly transaction volumes, with May exceeding 2,300 crore and reaching 2,320 crore. This figure climbed further to 2,366 crore in July, demonstrating consistent adoption.

Transaction Patterns and Global Footprint

  • Person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions constitute 63% of the total volume, while person-to-person (P2P) transactions account for 71% of the total value.
  • A significant portion of transactions remains low-value, with 86% of P2M and 59% of P2P transactions being below ₹500.

UPI has solidified its position as a global benchmark for digital payments, recognized by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It accounted for nearly 49% of the world’s real-time transaction volume as of 2025.

  • Over 66 crore daily transactions now surpass other global networks.
  • UPI operations have expanded to eleven countries, including the UAE, France, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece, and the Maldives.

The Government of India remains committed to further expanding the UPI ecosystem. This includes fostering innovation and strengthening the nation’s digital payments infrastructure through continued policy support, aiming for greater financial inclusion.
