India’s UPI celebrates 10 years, becoming the world’s largest real-time payment system with a staggering 13,000-fold increase in transaction volume.
India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has marked its 10th anniversary, establishing itself as the world’s largest real-time payment system. The platform has demonstrated significant expansion in both transaction volume and value over the past decade.
Exponential Transaction Growth
Annual UPI transaction volumes increased from 1.78 crore in the financial year 2017 (FY17) to over 24,162 crore by FY26, representing a nearly 13,000-fold surge.

As of July 2026, UPI is supported by 741 banks and has expanded its operations across 11 countries.
