UPI: A Decade of Explosive Growth in Digital Payments

India’s UPI, launched in 2016, celebrates a decade of phenomenal growth, witnessing a 13,000x surge in transactions and global recognition.
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), launched on August 25, 2016, has completed a decade, fundamentally reshaping India’s digital payments ecosystem. This platform is now recognized globally as a benchmark for real-time transactions.
Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the oversight of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), UPI has seen significant expansion. Its growth trajectory underscores its critical role in financial inclusion and digital adoption.
Key Growth Metrics
- Annual transaction volume soared from 1.78 crore in 2016-17 to over 24,162 crore in 2025-26, marking a nearly 13,000-fold increase.
- Transaction value escalated from Rs 0.07 lakh crore to approximately Rs 314 lakh crore over the same period, a jump exceeding 4,000-fold.
- Monthly transactions surpassed 2,300 crore in May 2026, reaching 2,320 crore, and peaked at 2,366 crore in July 2026.
- The number of banks participating in UPI grew from 44 in 2016-17 to 703 by 2025-26.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has acknowledged UPI as the world’s largest real-time payment system by transaction volume. As of 2025, it accounts for nearly 49% of global real-time payment transactions.
Expanding Global Footprint
Processing over 66 crore transactions daily, UPI has also extended its operations internationally. The system is now active in 11 countries, including the UAE, France, and Singapore.
The Indian government has affirmed its commitment to fostering further innovation and financial inclusion through UPI in the coming decade. This continued support aims to build on the platform’s established success and global recognition.
