If you are looking for predictable returns without the ups and downs of the equity market, fixed deposits are offering some attractive rates right now. The highest returns are increasingly coming from small finance banks, not India’s largest lenders, as of August 25.

Where the Highest Rates Are

Suryoday Small Finance Bank is currently offering the highest rate reported in the data, reaching 8.25% for regular customers. For senior citizens, this bank’s peak rate hits 8.50%, specifically available on five-year deposits.

Other small finance banks are also offering rates of 8% or more. Shivalik Small Finance Bank offers up to 8.00% for general citizens and 8.50% for senior citizens.

Jana Small Finance Bank provides up to 8.00% for general citizens and 8.30% for senior citizens. Ujjivan Small Finance Bank offers up to 7.80% and 8.30% respectively.

Utkarsh Small Finance Bank is offering up to 8.10% for general citizens and 8.25% for senior citizens. Unity Small Finance Bank offers up to 8.00% for general citizens and 8.50% for senior citizens.

Comparing with Major Banks

These rates become even more compelling when you compare them to what larger banks are offering. For instance, SBI’s highest regular rate is 6.45%.

HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank both offer a maximum of 6.50%, with Axis Bank also capping its maximum regular rate at 6.50%. This means the difference between the highest small finance bank rate and the largest banks can be nearly 1.75 percentage points for regular depositors.

Beyond Just the Rate: Tenure Matters

The headline interest rate shouldn’t be your only consideration; deposit tenure is equally important. For example, Suryoday’s 8.25% rate is available for five years, but Utkarsh offers 8.10% for a shorter 666-day period.

Shivalik’s 8% rate is available for roughly two years, while Unity’s 8% rate is for 501 days. If you don’t want to lock your money away for five years, a slightly lower rate over a shorter period might be more practical for you.

Rates can also vary significantly across different tenures within the same bank. Jana Small Finance Bank offers 8% for three years but only 7% for one year, while Ujjivan offers 7.80% for two years compared with 7.25% for one year.

Special Rates for Senior Citizens

Senior citizens continue to receive a meaningful premium on several bank deposits. Suryoday, Shivalik, and Unity Small Finance Banks all offer as much as 8.50%, which is the highest senior citizen rate available in the data.

Utkarsh offers 8.25% for seniors, and both Jana and Ujjivan provide up to 8.30%. For a senior citizen investing ₹10 lakh, an 8.50% simple annual interest rate could translate to approximately ₹85,000 of interest in a year before tax, though actual maturity depends on compounding frequency and tenure.

Important: Your Deposit Insurance

While higher interest rates are attractive, remember an important consideration: bank deposits are insured by the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) only up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank. This limit includes both your principal and any accrued interest.

This insurance limit makes diversification particularly relevant if you are investing larger sums. Spreading your investments across multiple banks can help ensure more of your funds remain insured.
