Learn how to reclaim unclaimed bank deposits, mutual funds, and shares in India using official RBI and SEBI portals like UDGAM. Don’t let your money go unclaimed!

Indian citizens can now reclaim forgotten financial assets, including bank deposits, mutual funds, and shares, through official digital tools provided by regulatory bodies. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and SEBI have introduced mechanisms to simplify the recovery process for unclaimed funds.

These assets frequently become untraceable due to common factors like job changes, relocation, or outdated contact information. Such circumstances often lead to accounts and investments becoming dormant, requiring specific steps for recovery.

Reclaiming Unclaimed Bank Deposits via UDGAM

The RBI launched the **UDGAM** (Unclaimed Deposits – Gateway to Access inforMation) portal to centralize the search for unclaimed deposits across various banks. This portal streamlines the process, making it easier for individuals to locate their dormant funds.

If a bank account or fixed deposit remains inactive for a period of ten years, its balance is transferred to the **Depositor Education and Awareness Fund**. However, the original account holder or their legal heirs retain the right to claim these funds.

Tracking Forgotten Mutual Funds and Shares

Beyond bank accounts, significant value can reside in old mutual fund folios. SEBI assists investors in tracking inactive mutual fund investments, defined as those without any transaction activity for a decade.

To recover these, investors must directly contact the relevant **Asset Management Company (AMC)** or their **Registrar and Transfer Agent (RTA)**. A critical initial step in this process involves updating all ‘Know Your Customer’ (KYC) records.

Similarly, individuals holding old physical share certificates or pending dividend warrants should reach out to the company’s RTA. Alternatively, they can contact the depository participant where their shares are currently held to initiate the recovery process.

Guidance for Legal Heirs

For legal heirs, tracing the financial assets of deceased relatives is an essential but often complex task. Nominees or heirs should systematically check for provident fund accounts, insurance policies, and investment folios.

Initiating claims requires providing necessary documentation, such as death certificates and proof of relationship to the deceased. Maintaining an updated, centralized list of all financial accounts and sharing it with a trusted family member can prevent future complications.

Navigating Recovery Safely and Avoiding Scams

Despite the existence of legitimate portals, a significant risk of fraud exists from entities posing as recovery agents. Investors must exercise extreme caution and never share sensitive information like OTPs, passwords, or full bank account details with unsolicited individuals or websites.

Official recovery processes are conducted directly through regulated financial institutions or verified government portals. Any agency demanding an upfront fee for fund recovery is typically a sign of a scam and should be avoided immediately.

Investors should always verify the legitimacy of any platform by checking official RBI or SEBI websites before entering personal or financial information. Proactive asset management, including regular updates to contact details and nominee information, remains the most effective way to ensure assets remain accessible and secure.
