The central government has appointed Annie George Mathew, Janmejaya Sinha, and Syed Akbaruddin as part-time, non-official directors to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Central Board. These appointments are effective on August 24, 2026, for four-year terms.
Introducing the New Directors
This strategic move by the central government introduces seasoned professionals to the RBI’s highest decision-making body. Each new director brings a distinct area of expertise, crucial for financial governance and policy guidance.
Annie George Mathew, a former special secretary in the Ministry of Finance, brings over 30 years of experience in public finance, financial management, government audit, and accounts.
Janmejaya Sinha is an economist and management consultant, currently serving as the chairman of Boston Consulting Group (BCG) India, having also chaired BCG Asia-Pacific.
Syed Akbaruddin, a former Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations and spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, is currently the dean of the Kautilya School of Public Policy in Hyderabad.
Current Composition of the Central Board
The Reserve Bank of India’s Central Board operates with a diverse membership, guiding the institution’s monetary and regulatory functions. These new additions will join an already established group of experts, contributing to its current composition of 14 members, including the Governor and Deputy Governors.
Government secretaries Anuradha Thakur and Sanjay Lohiya are also members, alongside renominated directors Revathy Iyer and Sachin Chaturvedi, whose four-year terms began in September 2022. The board also recently saw the appointment of former ISRO Chairman Somnath S and the reappointment of Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra Group.
The terms of several members concluded this year, necessitating these new appointments. Those whose terms ended include:
Satish Marathe
Swaminathan Gurumurthy
Venu Srinivasan
Pankaj Ramanbhai Patel
Ravindra H. Dholakia
These appointments ensure a continuous infusion of diverse perspectives into the central bank’s governance, vital for addressing ongoing policy and regulatory challenges.
