RBI Governor: Price Stability Key Amid Digital Push
By ThePip Desk
RBI Governor emphasizes price stability as top priority, guiding policy decisions. Central bank also advances digital infrastructure and sees strong capital inflows.
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra has affirmed that managing inflation remains the central bank’s foremost priority, placing price stability above short-term economic growth incentives. This stance comes ahead of the upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, where future policy decisions will be strictly guided by incoming economic data.
Governor Malhotra indicated that the current repo rate is considered appropriately positioned. This signals a cautious approach, focusing on long-term stability rather than immediate measures to stimulate growth.
External Capital Inflows Bolster Rupee Strength
The central bank has also seen significant mobilization of external capital. Approximately $32 billion has been garnered through measures such as FCNR(B) deposits, contributing to India’s financial resilience.
Furthermore, government securities have attracted over $7 billion in foreign investment since early June. Governor Malhotra expressed confidence in the Indian rupee’s fundamental strength, attributing its recent volatility to market expectations rather than underlying economic weaknesses.
Advancing Digital Financial Infrastructure
The RBI continues to advance its digital infrastructure initiatives across various fronts. The pilot program for the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) has expanded significantly, reaching around 1.2 crore retail users.
Total transaction volumes for the CBDC pilot have accumulated to approximately ₹40,000 crore. Another key focus area is the Unified Lending Interface (ULI), which aims to establish a more efficient and digitally integrated lending ecosystem.
Regulatory Focus on Banking Sector Stability
On the regulatory front, the RBI is adopting a careful approach to issuing new bank licenses. The central bank is prioritizing the consolidation and strengthening of urban cooperative banks to enhance their stability.
The RBI is also actively reviewing stakeholder feedback concerning new licensing frameworks designed for these cooperative entities. Investors are now closely watching for the MPC meeting minutes, which will offer further insights into future interest rate trends and liquidity management strategies.
