India’s central government appoints three seasoned professionals, Annie George Mathew, Janmejaya Kumar Sinha, and Syed Akbaruddin, to the RBI’s central board for a four-year term.

The Indian government has officially appointed three new part-time, non-official directors to the Reserve Bank of India’s central board. These key appointments are for a four-year term, aimed at strengthening the board’s diverse expertise.

New Appointments to the Central Board

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet formally approved these selections on August 22. This decision followed a proposal initiated by the Department of Financial Services, underscoring a strategic move in the nation’s financial governance.

  • Annie George Mathew: Former special secretary in the finance ministry.
  • Janmejaya Kumar Sinha: Chairman of Boston Consulting Group India.
  • Syed Akbaruddin: A distinguished former diplomat.

Profiles of the New Directors

Annie George Mathew brings extensive experience, having served as a member of the Sixteenth Finance Commission. Her background includes 34 years in public finance, government audit/accounts, procurement, and financial management. She previously held the position of special secretary for expenditure.

Janmejaya Kumar Sinha started his professional journey at the Reserve Bank of India. Currently, he serves as the chairman of Boston Consulting Group India, advising the government on crucial structural reforms and economic transformation strategies. He also contributed as a private-sector member to the Rajiv Gauba-led reform panels focused on Viksit Bharat 2047.

Syed Akbaruddin is a veteran 1985-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer. His distinguished diplomatic career includes serving as India’s permanent representative to the UN from 2016-2020. He also held roles as the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson from 2012-2015 and India’s representative at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from 2006-2011.

These appointments are expected to infuse the RBI’s central board with a broad spectrum of insights across public finance, economic strategy, and international relations.
