The Department of Financial Services convenes PSB Confluence in New Delhi to strategize public sector banking reforms, focusing on deposit mobilization and credit expansion for a ‘Viksit Bharat’.

The Department of Financial Services (DFS) under the finance ministry is set to host a two-day ‘PSB Confluence’ in New Delhi. This event brings together public sector banks (PSBs) and public financial institutions (PFIs) to discuss future reforms.

The primary goal is to align the banking sector with the national vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) through strategic deliberations.

Charting Banking’s Future Trajectory

A key focus of the confluence will be enhancing deposit mobilization. Public sector banks currently face challenges in matching the deposit growth rates seen in private sector counterparts, making this a critical area for strategy development.

Participants will explore methods to attract a larger share of household savings and boost credit expansion. The agenda also includes discussions on supporting the broader investment cycle across the economy.

The conclave aims to push PSBs into non-traditional banking segments. This expansion targets deeper retail relationships and a greater capture of financial savings.

  • Several PSBs, including Punjab National Bank, Punjab & Sind Bank, and Indian Bank, are actively establishing dedicated wealth and mutual fund verticals.
  • Others like State Bank of India and Canara Bank already operate asset management businesses through existing joint ventures.

Strengthening Rural Infrastructure and Access

Discussions will extend to reinforcing rural value-chain infrastructure. This includes specific attention to agriculture and horticulture, encompassing post-harvest facilities and crucial market linkages.

Priority-sector lending will also be a significant topic, focusing on extending formal credit to populations that are currently underserved. A dedicated youth-focused track will explore the creation of tailored banking products for younger demographics.

Further thematic areas underscore the government’s emphasis on actionable outcomes. These topics were chosen for their potential to translate policy into measurable, people-centric results.

  • Developing global capability center ecosystems.
  • Strategies to expand and innovate the credit card business.

Key Participants and Leadership

The event expects to host approximately 125 senior executives. This includes chairmen, managing directors, and executive directors from PSBs, alongside leaders from various key financial institutions.

Notable institutions represented include Nabard, Exim Bank, Sidbi, National Housing Bank, IIFCL, and NaBFID. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary are scheduled to address the gathering.

Senior officials from the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and DFS will also participate. The meeting aims to move beyond theoretical discussions to identify practical, actionable, and time-bound initiatives for the entire banking ecosystem.
