Meta removes deceptive adult-themed ads on Facebook & Instagram targeting Indian users with banking malware. Learn how these scams work and Meta’s response.
Meta has initiated the removal of numerous adult-themed advertisements from Facebook and Instagram platforms, responding to scams targeting Indian users. These deceptive ads lured individuals into downloading malicious Android applications designed to compromise financial security.
The removed applications were disguised as sexual entertainment, but their true function was to steal banking credentials, access sensitive personal data, and ultimately drain bank accounts. This widespread scheme specifically exploited users in India through social media channels.

The malicious applications, such as “Movexa.apk,” were distributed outside official app stores. They possessed capabilities to steal sensitive information, including PINs and one-time passwords, allowing for the unauthorized draining of bank accounts.
Financial Impact and Regulatory Response
This action by Meta follows direct concerns raised by Indian authorities regarding a significant increase in financial fraud incidents. India reportedly lost around $2.4 billion to cyber fraud in 2025.
The Indian government has intensified its scrutiny of technology platforms to combat such illicit activities. The incident underscores India’s evolving regulatory landscape and its firm stance against platforms that facilitate financial fraud, highlighting ongoing efforts to protect digital consumers.
