Kotak Mahindra Bank CEO Succession: Internal Candidates Proposed
By ThePip Desk
Kotak Mahindra Bank proposes internal leaders Anup Saha and Paritosh Kashyap to RBI for CEO role, following Ashok Vaswani’s departure.
Kotak Mahindra Bank has formally recommended two internal executive directors, Anup Saha and Paritosh Kashyap, to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for consideration as its next Chief Executive Officer. This move follows current CEO Ashok Vaswani’s decision not to seek reappointment for personal reasons.
Vaswani’s term is slated to conclude on December 31, 2026. His successor will inherit the mandate to continue the bank’s strategic growth objectives.
Regulatory Process for Leadership Succession
Indian banking regulations stipulate that financial institutions must propose a minimum of two candidates for the CEO position. The Reserve Bank of India holds the authority to either approve one of the recommended individuals or request additional options if the initial proposals are deemed unsuitable.
Anup Saha: Consumer Banking and Digital Focus
Anup Saha, a Whole-time Director at Kotak Mahindra Bank, oversees crucial areas including consumer banking, marketing, and data analytics. He is actively involved in driving customer-centric and digital transformations within the institution, having joined the bank in January of the current year.
Before his tenure at Kotak Mahindra Bank, Saha served as Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director at Bajaj Finance, where he significantly expanded the customer base to over 100 million through various consumer finance initiatives. His career also includes 14 years at ICICI Bank, holding roles such as Senior General Manager and Group Product Head, where he managed retail home loans, vehicle loans, developer funding, and credit cards.
Saha has also held board positions at ICICI Bank HFC and TransUnion CIBIL, and began his career with stints at GE Capital, SBI Cards, Blow Plast, and BHEL. He holds an MBA from IIM Lucknow and an engineering degree from IIT Kharagpur.
Paritosh Kashyap: Wholesale Banking Expertise
Paritosh Kashyap, also a Whole-time Director at Kotak Mahindra Bank, brings over three decades of extensive experience in capital structuring, financing, and securitisation. His previous role as Group President & Head of Wholesale Banking involved spearheading growth across corporate banking, structured finance, and infrastructure financing.
Kashyap serves as a Non-Executive Director on the boards of Kotak Mahindra Investments and Kotak Infrastructure Debt Fund, and is a director on the board of Kotak Mahindra Capital Company. A qualified Chartered Accountant and Cost & Works Accountant, he was recognized as “CA Business Leader” by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in 2024.
Continuing Kotak Mahindra Bank’s Growth Trajectory
The recommendation of these internal candidates marks the initial stage in determining Vaswani’s successor. Vaswani, who assumed the CEO role on January 1, 2024, after Uday Kotak’s two-decade leadership, had set an ambition for the bank to become India’s third-largest private lender by after-tax profit.
The incoming CEO will be tasked with upholding and advancing this strategic growth trajectory for Kotak Mahindra Bank. The RBI’s review process will now determine the final outcome of this significant leadership transition.
