Kotak Mahindra Bank proposes Anup Saha and Paritosh Kashyap to RBI for CEO role as Ashok Vaswani steps down Dec 31, 2026.

Kotak Mahindra Bank has formally proposed two of its internal executive directors, Anup Saha and Paritosh Kashyap, to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as potential candidates for its next Chief Executive Officer. This submission marks a critical initial step in the succession planning for the bank, as current CEO Ashok Vaswani is slated to conclude his term on December 31, 2026.

Vaswani has indicated he will not seek reappointment, citing personal reasons for his decision to step down. His departure initiates a closely watched leadership transition for India’s fourth-largest private-sector bank.

Understanding the Regulatory Mechanism

Indian banking regulations mandate that financial institutions present at least two candidates for the CEO position to the RBI. This regulatory requirement ensures a robust selection process overseen by the central bank.

The RBI holds the ultimate authority to either endorse one of the suggested individuals or, if the initial proposals are deemed unsuitable, request the bank to provide alternative nominees. This oversight mechanism is central to maintaining stability and governance within the banking sector.

Key Internal Candidates Emerge

The two internal executives put forth by Kotak Mahindra Bank bring distinct experiences to the table. Anup Saha, who joined the bank in January 2026 from Bajaj Finance, currently oversees the vital retail banking division.

Meanwhile, Paritosh Kashyap, a long-standing executive within the institution, currently leads the wholesale banking division. Both candidates represent established leadership within the bank’s operational framework.

Current Leadership and Strategic Vision

The succession process is being closely observed given Kotak Mahindra Bank’s strategic ambitions. The bank aims to ascend to the third position in terms of after-tax profit under Vaswani’s leadership.

Ashok Vaswani, a seasoned banker with previous roles at Barclays and Citigroup, assumed the CEO position on January 1, 2024, succeeding founder Uday Kotak. His tenure has focused on driving the bank towards its ambitious growth targets.
