India’s digital lending sector is poised for a massive 15-fold growth, reaching Rs 33-36 lakh crore by FY2031, fueled by robust digital infrastructure and expanding credit access.

India’s digital lending market is projected to experience substantial expansion, with its valuation expected to reach between Rs 33-36 lakh crore by FY2031. This forecast, from a Redseer Strategy Consultants report, indicates a nearly 15-fold increase from its estimated Rs 2.2 lakh crore in FY2026.

This significant growth trajectory is primarily underpinned by the advancement of digital public infrastructure. Systems like Aadhaar e-KYC, UPI, and the Account Aggregator framework have demonstrably reduced the costs associated with loan origination.

Key Growth Drivers

  • Digital public infrastructure: Aadhaar e-KYC, UPI, Account Aggregator.
  • Evolving behavior of digital-first consumers.
  • Utilization of alternate data for underwriting small-ticket loans.

The report underscores digital lending’s role in formalizing India’s credit base. A notable 69% of digital borrowers had previously operated outside the formal financial system, suggesting these platforms are expanding credit access rather than simply replacing traditional services.

Digital vs. Traditional Credit Preferences

  • Digital platforms are favored for short-term credit and personal loans under Rs 2 lakh.
  • Banks maintain dominance in secured loans and higher-value borrowing for housing, education, and business.

Borrower behavior within the digital lending sphere shows increasing maturity. The report indicates that 77% of surveyed borrowers have utilized lending applications for over a year, with 69% having secured multiple loans.

Two distinct borrower segments have emerged: ‘Credit Climbers,’ who progressively increase their borrowing amounts, and ‘Cautious Borrowers,’ who expand their formal credit engagement through frequent, smaller loans.

To enhance retention and promote responsible borrowing, tailored strategies are recommended. These include pre-approved credit limit enhancements for Credit Climbers and highlighting credit scores for Cautious Borrowers.
