By Business Desk
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and World Bank President Ajay Banga met to deepen India-World Bank ties, focusing on finance, infrastructure, and MSME support.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman convened with World Bank President Ajay Banga during the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) Meeting, focusing on enhancing the strategic partnership between India and the World Bank Group.
Discussions centered on initiatives to deepen corporate, infrastructure, and municipal bond markets, aiming to bolster India’s financial ecosystem. Sitharaman expressed appreciation for the World Bank Group’s engagement, specifically noting the swift processing of a significant development financing package.
Key Financial Engagements
- The World Bank Group rapidly processed a USD 1.5 billion Development Policy Financing (DPF).
- The International Finance Corporation (IFC) provided crucial support for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through SIDBI.
A central theme of the meeting involved exploring an expanded role for the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) within India. This aims to systematically utilize guarantees to mobilize private capital for critical projects.
Mobilizing Private Capital and Risk Mitigation
MIGA’s involvement would facilitate the mobilization of private capital through robust guarantee mechanisms. The leaders also considered a sector-based, programmatic approach to credit enhancement specifically for infrastructure projects.
President Banga commended India’s substantial infrastructure transformation, identifying further opportunities for the World Bank Group to support India’s development ambitions. This includes MIGA’s role in providing political risk insurance for Indian companies investing overseas.
Sitharaman highlighted India’s collaborative efforts with the World Bank Group to establish a Global Digital Public Infrastructure Knowledge Hub. This hub, based in India, will focus on leveraging technology to advance various sectors.
Leveraging Technology and Tourism Development
- The Global Digital Public Infrastructure Knowledge Hub aims to utilize technology in areas like agriculture.
- Leaders discussed developing globally competitive tourism destinations under the new India-World Bank Group Country Partnership Framework.
This tourism strategy involves a coordinated approach, combining International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) policy and infrastructure support with IFC investment and MIGA guarantees. The meeting concluded by envisioning an evolution of the partnership, moving beyond a traditional lender-borrower dynamic.
The goal is to transform the relationship into a strategic platform, leveraging India’s scale alongside the World Bank Group’s global expertise and financing instruments for knowledge, innovation, and private capital mobilization.
