India Banks Closed Aug 15 for Independence Day; Digital Services Active

Bank branches across India will observe a nationwide closure on Saturday, August 15, 2026, for the country’s 80th Independence Day. Physical banking operations will uniformly shut down across all states and union territories, a mandate that also coincides with the Parsi New Year.

Despite physical branch closures, essential digital banking services will remain fully operational. Customers can continue to utilize net banking, mobile banking applications, UPI transfers, and ATM withdrawals without interruption during the holiday period.

Understanding Regional Bank Holiday Schedules

In addition to the national holiday, the Reserve Bank of India’s official calendar lists several regional bank holidays throughout August. These localized closures vary by state and city, impacting specific banking services.

• On August 19, banks in Agartala will close for Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur’s birthday.
• For Milad-Un-Nabi and First Onam, bank branches in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Vijayawada will be closed on August 25.
• A broader set of centers, including Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, Lucknow, and Patna, will observe a holiday on August 26 for Id-E-Milad and Thiruvonam.
• Further regional closures are set for August 28, affecting cities like Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Dehradun, and Srinagar, marking Raksha Bandhan, Pang-Lhabsol, and Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi.

Standard Weekly Bank Closures

Standard weekly bank holidays will also apply in August, impacting operations nationwide. These include all Sundays and the fourth Saturday of the month.

• Sundays: August 16 and August 23.
• Fourth Saturday: August 22.
