EPS Higher Pension Claims: Govt. Expedites Processing
By ThePip Desk
India’s govt. introduces 4 steps to speed up EPS higher pension claims post-Supreme Court ruling. Learn about the new online facility & EPFO verification.
The Indian government has outlined four measures to accelerate the processing of higher-pension applications under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS). This initiative addresses delays following a November 2022 Supreme Court judgment, which permitted eligible individuals to opt for increased pension contributions based on actual wages.
Streamlining the Higher Pension Process
These government-mandated steps aim to improve the efficiency and transparency of processing claims for increased pension benefits. The goal is to clear the backlog and facilitate timely disbursal for eligible beneficiaries.
- An online facility has been established for submitting higher-pension applications, specifically designed to streamline the validation of Joint Options. However, merely submitting an application does not guarantee its approval, as the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) must still verify eligibility thoroughly.
- The EPFO is actively verifying applications by checking salary and contribution records, often seeking necessary clarifications directly from employers. This verification is crucial because higher pension entitlements are directly linked to an employee’s historical contribution data, requiring careful examination for any discrepancies.
- Instructions have been issued to regional offices to ensure the timely disposal of these cases, distributing the responsibility for clearing the backlog beyond just the EPFO headquarters. Regional offices have also been directed to prioritize these applications and have previously utilized additional manpower to manage the increased workload.
- The EPFO is conducting regular video conferences with its Zonal and Regional Offices to monitor progress, identify bottlenecks, and facilitate the resolution of stalled cases. This proactive oversight helps in addressing challenges swiftly and maintaining momentum.
Progress and Remaining Steps
Significant progress has been made in processing the applications forwarded by employers within the specified timelines. However, the government has not yet established a new nationwide deadline for resolving all pending cases or disbursing arrears.
- As of March 9, 2026, over 99.2% of approximately 1.524 million applications had been disposed of.
- These applications were forwarded by employers by the deadline of January 31, 2025.
Understanding the Higher Pension Claim Mechanism
For eligible applicants, the process involves several distinct stages after initial verification. It is essential for applicants to understand that an application submission is only the first step in a multi-stage procedure.
- Eligible applicants first receive demand letters from the EPFO.
- Retired individuals must then submit Form 10D and deposit the required amounts to receive their Pension Payment Orders (PPOs).
- Working members will receive their PPOs upon reaching the eligible age and submitting their respective claim forms.
The entire process necessitates verification of past contributions and the payment of any due amounts, underscoring that a submitted application is not equivalent to an approved higher pension. This ensures the integrity and accuracy of the pension disbursement system.
