EPFO processed over 8.3 crore claims in FY26, significantly boosted by a reform ending mandatory cheque uploads, benefiting 7 crore members and streamlining the online claims process.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) settled over 8.3 crore claims during the fiscal year 2025-26, marking a substantial increase from the prior period. This surge in settlements was significantly aided by a key reform implemented in April 2025, which simplified the online claims process for millions.

Claim Settlement Highlights

  • Claims settled in FY2025-26: 8.3 crore
  • Claims settled in FY2024-25: 6.01 crore
  • Members impacted by reform: Approximately 7 crore
  • Reform implementation: April 2025

This information was provided by the Ministry of State for Labour and Employment, Shobha Karandlaje, in a written response to the Rajya Sabha on August 6, 2026. The critical reform involved discontinuing the mandatory upload of a cancelled cheque or an attested bank passbook image for online claims.

Enhancing the Online Claims Process

The previous requirement often led to claim rejections due to poor quality or unreadable document uploads. Removing this step has directly benefited around 7 crore members by significantly reducing these rejections and the associated grievances.

The EPFO’s enhanced digital systems are the foundation for this streamlined process. These technological improvements now allow for direct verification of bank account details, eliminating the need for members to submit physical documentation.

This modernization effort makes the entire online claim submission more user-friendly and efficient, reflecting a commitment to leveraging technology for improved member services.
