EPF India: Membership & Contribution Rules Explained

By ThePip DeskEPF India: Membership & Contribution Rules Explained

Understand EPF eligibility, contribution rules (12% each for employee & employer), and the ₹15,000 basic pay limit for salaried individuals in India.

Starting your first job in India means navigating new financial territory, and the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) is a crucial part of that journey. This government-backed scheme helps salaried individuals build retirement savings, but understanding how to join is key.

To become an EPF subscriber, your basic pay and dearness allowance (DA) must be up to ₹15,000 per month. If your earnings exceed this amount, you still have the option to subscribe to the Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF).

Key EPF Numbers to Know

  • The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) recommended an 8.25% interest rate for both EPF and VPF for the financial year 2026, which was approved and credited in July.
  • Your contributions, along with your employer’s, are capped at ₹15,000, with both contributing 12% each.

Your ability to join the EPF largely depends on whether your organization or company is covered by the PF Act. If your employer’s firm is not subject to this Act, you cannot become an EPF member.

Should your organization be covered by the Act but not offer EPF, you can contact the nearest Regional Provident Fund Commissioner for assistance. Remember, the PF Act applies to an organization as a whole, making all its employees eligible regardless of their specific work location.

Understanding Your Eligibility Beyond Salary

You cannot directly enroll in EPF; membership is acquired through employment in an establishment already covered by the EPF & MP Act, 1952. Apprentices are not eligible for EPF membership but must be enrolled once they become full-time employees.

  • Membership is counted separately for each establishment if you work in multiple organizations.
  • There are no age restrictions for becoming an EPF member, though an employee who has already reached 58 years of age cannot join the pension fund.
  • If you transfer to a new organization, you must be re-enrolled for PF transfer purposes.

EPF membership is only permitted when wages are payable to you as an employee. While employees whose basic wages and DA are up to ₹15,000 per month are automatically eligible, you continue to be a subscriber even if your pay increases later.

If you earn more than ₹15,000, you can still opt for EPF membership under Para 26(6) of the EPF Scheme. This requires submitting an option to the EPF office within six months of joining your organization.

EPF and Your Pension Scheme

Membership in the pension scheme is exclusively tied to your EPF membership. However, if you are a new employee joining an organization since September 1, 2014, with basic wages exceeding ₹15,000 per month, you can become a PF member under Para 26(6) but are not eligible for pension fund membership.

In such cases, both your employee and employer contributions, each 12% of your pay, are directed solely to your EPF account. Navigating these rules ensures you make the most of this vital retirement savings tool from the start of your career.
