Upcoming bank strike deferred as unions and IBA agree to form a high-level committee on the five-day work week. Normal banking operations to continue.

A planned three-day strike by the United Forum of Bank Unions, which was scheduled to take place from September 28 to September 30, 2026, has been deferred. Banking operations are now expected to continue normally following this decision.

Late-Night Talks Avert Walkout

The strike was called off after successful late-night negotiations between union leaders and the Indian Banks’ Association. Both parties reached an agreement during these discussions.

Balancing Work Schedules

The strike was originally organized to advocate for a five-day work week for bank employees. This demand was supported by arguments regarding work-life balance and standard schedules observed by other financial institutions, such as the RBI and stock markets.

High-Level Committee Formed

In response to the union demands, the Indian Banks’ Association agreed to establish a high-level committee. This group will deliberate on the proposal of declaring remaining Saturdays as holidays to find a solution satisfying all stakeholders, including customers.
