Key Highlights

Alok Singh, CIO of Bank of India Mutual Fund, shares insights on India’s stable inflation, resilient markets, and strategic sectoral allocations for growth.

Alok Singh, Chief Investment Officer at Bank of India Mutual Fund, recently shared his insights on India’s economic trajectory, market dynamics, and strategic investment approaches. He highlighted India’s stable inflation outlook and the growing resilience of domestic markets against global shifts.

Inflation Outlook and RBI Policy

Singh noted that India’s inflation path remains relatively comfortable, contrasting with the easing observed in the U.S. He expects inflation to largely stay within the Reserve Bank of India’s comfort range. This scenario provides the RBI with flexibility to maintain an accommodative stance and potentially support economic growth through calibrated easing measures.

A benign inflation and interest rate environment typically boosts corporate earnings and broader consumption demand. Combined with India’s structural growth outlook, this should continue to support market sentiment effectively.

Inflows and Domestic Resilience

Foreign institutional investors have resumed buying in Indian markets after a period of selling, which Singh described as an encouraging signal. This shift reflects improved confidence in India’s strong earnings, macroeconomic stability, and long-term growth prospects.

He emphasized that market direction should not be viewed solely through foreign flows. Domestic inflows have significantly reduced market dependence on foreign capital, acting as a robust buffer against global risk-off events and ensuring medium-term market support.

Q1 Earnings and Market Reactions

Regarding Q1 earnings, Singh indicated that markets are currently balancing earnings expectations with confidence in India’s sustained growth narrative. A significant disappointment in Q1 earnings across various sectors could lead to a short-term market correction.

However, he also pointed out that quarterly results announced so far have generally exceeded expectations. The market has already experienced phases of consolidation this year, with investors increasingly discerning between companies offering sustainable earnings visibility and those facing temporary challenges.

Sectoral Investment Strategy

Bank of India Mutual Fund’s allocation philosophy prioritizes a bottom-up approach focused on business quality rather than broad sector calls. Despite this, Singh confirmed positive views on several key sectors.

The fund is currently overweight on financial services, healthcare, capital goods, and consumption sectors. Conversely, the fund maintains an underweight position on the information technology and oil & gas sectors, reflecting specific strategic considerations.
