Assam Flood Relief: 6-Month Loan Moratorium Announced

Assam CM announces a 6-month loan moratorium and relief package for flood-affected families, including farmers, SHGs, and those in fisheries.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has introduced a comprehensive relief package for families affected by recent floods across four districts. This initiative includes a crucial six-month moratorium on loan repayments, alongside various rehabilitation and educational support measures.
Financial Relief for Borrowers
The core of the financial aid is a six-month moratorium on loan repayments and EMIs for specific flood-affected borrowers. This measure aims to alleviate immediate financial strain on those rebuilding their lives.
Borrowers include farmers, self-help groups, and individuals involved in animal husbandry. It also extends to those engaged in fisheries and other agricultural activities.
The state government is actively exploring the extension of similar relief to individuals holding loans from private financial institutions.
Educational and Document Support
Recognizing the academic disruption, the government will provide essential educational assistance to students who lost their materials. This support is particularly focused on heavily impacted regions.
Free textbooks will be distributed to students, especially in areas like Sivasagar and Charaideo. Students can also obtain duplicate copies of lost academic documents without any charge.
Additionally, damaged schools and colleges will receive financial assistance for necessary repairs, ensuring educational continuity.
Intensified Relief and Rehabilitation Efforts
Relief operations have been significantly intensified to ensure immediate aid reaches those in need. Essential supplies are being dispatched to critical districts.
2,37,513 relief kits have been sent to Sivasagar. An additional 63,000 kits were dispatched to Charaideo, containing crucial items.
These kits provide essential supplies such as rice, pulses, and edible oil to flood-affected families.
Community Infrastructure Grants
Beyond individual and educational aid, the rehabilitation program extends to supporting community infrastructure vital to the affected regions. This includes traditional and public institutions.
A one-time financial grant of Rs 1.5 lakh is allocated for flood-damaged Namghars in Sivasagar and Charaideo. These are traditional Vaishnavite monastery/prayer halls.
Other damaged public institutions will also receive financial support to restore essential services, ensuring broader community recovery.
Chief Minister Sarma reiterated the Assam government’s firm commitment to delivering all necessary assistance. The aim is to fully support affected families through their rehabilitation process and restore normalcy across the impacted districts.
