Eight Australian universities are making a significant strategic push into India, establishing international branch campuses to cater to the nation’s burgeoning student population. This expansion aims to deliver globally recognized Australian degrees at a substantially reduced cost.

This strategic pivot reflects a clear response to the escalating demand from Indian students for international education, alongside a broader effort to strengthen bilateral educational ties. The move allows Australian institutions to tap into a massive talent pool directly within India.

Strategic Expansion Details

• Currently, two Australian universities, Deakin University and the University of Wollongong, are operational in GIFT City, Gujarat.
• An additional two campuses are set to open soon, with four more planned for this year.
• Western Sydney University targets a 2027 opening for its Greater Noida campus.
• The University of Western Australia is committing AUS $84 million to establish campuses in Mumbai and Chennai.
• The number of Indian students in Australian universities rose from 76,547 in 2022 to 110,662 in 2024.
• Indian students can access these degrees at up to 50% lower tuition costs compared to studying in Australia.

Beyond the initial wave, prominent institutions like Melbourne Global Centre in Delhi and Victoria University in Gurgaon are also part of this extensive educational outreach.
