Ashish Kumar announces Fundamentum Frontier Advisors fund launch.

Key Highlights

Fundamentum cofounder Ashish Kumar launches ₹2,000 Cr AI & Deeptech VC fund, F2A, with Nandan Nilekani as anchor investor. Targeting India’s innovation.

Ashish Kumar, a distinguished partner and cofounder at Fundamentum Partnership, has unveiled a new private investment platform named Fundamentum Frontier Advisors (F2A). This strategic initiative is designed to channel significant capital into the burgeoning deeptech and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors, marking a substantial commitment to India’s innovation ecosystem. The launch signifies a notable expansion in the venture capital landscape, particularly for technologies poised to redefine various industries.

F2A has successfully secured approval from the Securities and Board of India (SEBI) to establish an Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) with a target corpus of ₹2,000 Cr. This substantial fund will be raised from both domestic and international investors, underscoring the global interest in India’s technological advancements. Notably, Nandan Nilekani, the esteemed cofounder of Infosys, will serve as the anchor investor, lending considerable weight and credibility to the fund’s mission to back cutting-edge AI-native and deeptech startups. In addition to the AIF, F2A plans to manage an additional ₹1,000 Cr in co-investments through a separate vehicle structured outside of India, further amplifying its investment capacity.

Fundamentum Frontier Advisors: A Deep Dive into its Structure and Leadership

The leadership team at Fundamentum Frontier Advisors has been strategically assembled to navigate the complexities of deeptech and AI investments. Alongside Ashish Kumar, Debraj Banerjee has joined F2A as a General Partner. Banerjee brings extensive experience from his previous role as Senior and Investment Committee Member at SIDBI Venture Capital, a well-regarded entity in the Indian venture ecosystem. This combined leadership aims to leverage deep industry knowledge and investment acumen to identify and nurture promising ventures.

Ashish Kumar will concurrently maintain his oversight responsibilities for the existing portfolio of earlier Fundamentum funds, ensuring continuity and value creation across both platforms. This dual role highlights a strategic approach to managing current commitments while spearheading new growth initiatives. The establishment of F2A as a distinct legal entity, separate from Fundamentum Partnership, underscores a focused strategy for its specialized investment mandate.

Strategic Vision for AI and Deeptech Investments

Ashish Kumar articulated the strategic impetus behind F2A, stating, “We are seeing a structural shift in how AI and deeptech are being built and adopted across sectors. F2A is a continuation of our effort to partner with founders building enduring, technology-led businesses, with the same disciplined, long-term approach that has defined Fundamentum.” This statement emphasizes a commitment to a foundational and sustained investment philosophy, aiming to cultivate resilient and impactful technology companies.

F2A positions itself as “a platform with multiple strategies over a period of time,” indicating a flexible and evolving investment framework. The firm adopts a stage-agnostic approach, meaning it will consider investments across various growth phases of startups. Its core focus spans consumer AI, enterprise AI, and physical AI, reflecting a comprehensive vision for the application and development of artificial intelligence. Ashish Kumar will specifically lead consumer and AI investments, while Debraj Banerjee will spearhead investments in enterprise and physical AI, ensuring specialized expertise guides each segment.

Nandan Nilekani further elucidated the fund’s philosophy, remarking, “F2A represents our belief that enduring companies are built on strong foundations, explore frontier technologies, and achieve non-linear acceleration. Foundation reflects the strong base; Frontier reflects innovation through emerging technologies; Acceleration reflects how they scale.” This perspective underscores the fund’s dedication to supporting ventures that combine robust fundamentals with pioneering technological advancements and rapid scaling potential.

India’s Expanding Deeptech Investment Landscape

The launch of Fundamentum Frontier Advisors occurs within a dynamic period for India’s deeptech sector, characterized by escalating investor interest and a supportive policy environment. Fundamentum Partnership, founded in 2017 by Nandan Nilekani and Sanjeev Aggarwal, has been a significant player in the tech-focused venture capital space, providing both capital and mentorship to startups. While there are common team members like Kumar and Nilekani, F2A operates as a distinct legal entity, allowing for specialized focus and strategy.

Recent developments in the Indian venture capital market further highlight the growing appetite for deeptech. Just in the past week, Piper Serica introduced its Bharat Tech Fund, an ₹800 Cr initiative aimed at backing startups across critical areas such as semiconductors, AI, spacetech, and defence tech. Concurrently, Shastra VC launched a substantial $100 Mn fund dedicated to early-stage deeptech, AI, and climate sciences startups, reinforcing the sector’s attractiveness for venture capital deployment.

Governmental Support and Sectoral Momentum

The Indian government has played an instrumental role in fostering the deeptech industry through various policy initiatives and financial incentives. Earlier this year, the Centre extended the benefits under the Startup India program for deeptech ventures, significantly prolonging the eligibility period to 20 years. This extension provides long-term stability and encouragement for deeptech innovators. Additionally, the turnover eligibility threshold for these benefits was raised to ₹300 Cr, broadening the scope of companies that can avail governmental support.

Further bolstering the sector, the last two Union Budgets have allocated substantial support, including the ₹1 Lakh Cr Research and Development and Innovation (RDI) scheme. Initiatives such as the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 also underscore the government’s strategic focus on building indigenous capabilities in critical technological domains. These policy measures collectively create a conducive environment for deeptech innovation and investment, aligning with national strategic priorities.

The tangible results of this concerted effort are evident in the sector’s financial performance. Deeptech emerged as India’s third most-funded startup segment in 2025, a significant achievement that reflects its increasing prominence. Last year, deeptech startups collectively raised approximately $500 Mn across 87 deals, demonstrating robust investment activity. This momentum has continued into the current fiscal year, with the sector attracting $166 Mn of capital in the first quarter of 2026 alone, signaling sustained investor confidence and growth trajectory.
