Andhra Pradesh launches India’s first Quantum & AI university in Amaravati with a ₹730.7 Cr investment from the central government, boosting deep-tech education.
Andhra Pradesh is set to establish India’s inaugural dedicated Quantum and Artificial Intelligence (AI) university campus in Amaravati, backed by a substantial Rs 730.7 crore investment from the Government of India over five years. This strategic initiative aims to solidify the state’s position as a hub for deep-tech education and innovation.
The significant investment of Rs 730.7 crore is earmarked for a duration of five years, supporting the development of an 8.5-acre campus. This ambitious project aims to train 8,250 learners over five years, with the annual student intake projected to reach approximately 3,913 by its fifth year. The campus will also feature a 500-bed residential facility for students.
The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), will develop the university. This project, fully funded by MeitY, ensures no financial burden falls on the state government of Andhra Pradesh. The establishment directly supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to equip one crore young Indians with AI skills within the upcoming year.
Strategic Alignment and National Vision
This move aligns with broader national missions, including the National Quantum Mission, IndiaAI Mission, and India Semiconductor Mission, to drive innovation in critical technological areas. The aim is to prepare India’s workforce for the evolving AI era and contribute to the nation’s goal of becoming a developed country by 2047. The campus infrastructure will support cutting-edge research and learning environments.
Academic Focus and Campus Development
The university’s academic programs will encompass a wide range of advanced disciplines, including Quantum Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Science. Further specializations will cover Semiconductor Fabrication, Chip Design, VLSI, ATMP, Embedded Systems, and High-Performance Computing. These offerings underscore a comprehensive approach to deep-tech education.
Campus infrastructure will feature academic blocks, state-of-the-art laboratories, and a specialized Quantum Research, Innovation and Incubation Block. Additionally, the facility will include a 500-bed residential unit and integrate sustainable elements such as solar power and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations. These provisions are designed to create a conducive environment for cutting-edge learning and research.
While the permanent 8.5-acre campus in Amaravati is under construction, academic activities will commence in September 2026. These initial operations will take place at a temporary facility located within Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur. The project also plans to foster collaborations with institutions such as IIT Tirupati to enhance its research and educational capabilities.
