Key Highlights

AMFI suspends Peak XV-backed Stable Money’s mutual fund distribution business until November 2026, impacting its operations and growth in India’s fintech sector.

Regulatory Action Hits Stable Money

The Association for Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) has reportedly suspended Peak XV Partners-backed wealthtech startup Stable Money from its mutual fund distribution business. This significant regulatory action underscores heightened scrutiny in India’s expanding financial technology sector. The move prevents the Bengaluru-based startup from issuing mutual fund products for an extended period, posing a notable challenge to its operational continuity and growth ambitions.

Citing sources, ET reported that AMFI has barred Stable Money Finserv from distributing mutual fund products. The industry body imposed a suspension effective from May 21 to November 20, 2026. This directive specifically targets the company’s ability to facilitate new mutual fund investments, impacting a core aspect of its business model.

Company Responds to Suspension

Stable Money, while not directly confirming AMFI’s involvement, acknowledged a temporary halt on fresh investments in gold and silver mutual funds. This pause encompasses both Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) and lump sum investments, affecting a core offering for its retail investors. The startup further stated that certain aspects of its mutual fund distribution operations are currently under an internal review process.

A company statement clarified, “We are engaging with the relevant industry and regulatory stakeholders in relation to this review.” Stable Money emphasized that commenting further on the specifics of the situation would be inappropriate at this stage, given the ongoing nature of the process. This indicates active discussions are underway to resolve the regulatory issues.

Stable Money’s Growth Trajectory and Market Context

Founded in 2022 by Saurabh Jain and Harish Reddy, Stable Money specializes in providing retail investors access to a range of fixed-income products. Its platform facilitates investments in instruments such as fixed deposits, bonds, and debt mutual funds, positioning itself as a key player in the low-risk investment segment. The startup operates in a competitive Indian wealthtech market, alongside established platforms like Groww, Zerodha Coin, and Upstox.

Earlier this year, Stable Money successfully raised $25 million in a pre-Series C funding round, spearheaded by prominent investor Peak XV. The company’s total funding to date stands at approximately $65 million, attracting capital from a diverse group of investors including Z47, RTP Global, Lightspeed, Aditya Birla Ventures, and Mars Shot Ventures. In February, Stable Money reported a substantial user base of over 50 lakh investors and claimed to have facilitated more than ₹5,000 crore in investments.

Broader Trends in India’s Wealthtech Sector

This regulatory action against Stable Money unfolds within a dynamic period for India’s wealthtech segment. The mutual funds sector, in particular, is experiencing rapid growth, fueled by increasing financial literacy and enhanced accessibility to a variety of financial products. Consequently, numerous wealthtech startups are actively bolstering their mutual fund portfolios and expanding their service offerings to capitalize on this market momentum.

Recent industry developments highlight this trend, with other wealth management firms making strategic moves. Earlier this week, Scripbox acquired the mutual fund distribution business of Bluechip Capital, aiming to broaden its market footprint, especially in the Delhi NCR region. Similarly, AssetPlus recently secured ₹175 crore in funding, designated for strengthening the technological infrastructure of its own mutual fund distribution platform, signaling continued investment and innovation across the sector.
