India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA) has launched a formal investigation into a severe in-flight turbulence incident involving Air India flight AI 2379, a Phuket-Delhi route. This probe follows the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) suspending the two pilots involved, pending drug test confirmations.

During its cruise, the flight experienced significant turbulence, resulting in injuries to 17 individuals, including four cabin crew members. Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu confirmed these injuries, some involving spinal and neck trauma, though the aircraft landed safely in Delhi with all occupants disembarking without serious harm.

Pilot Scrutiny Intensifies

  • The DGCA suspended both pilots immediately following the incident.
  • Both pilots underwent mandatory psychoactive substance screening tests.
  • The Pilot-in-Command’s (PIC) screening test produced a result requiring confirmatory testing.
  • Samples have been dispatched to a designated laboratory for further analysis, following earlier reports of a potential dope test failure for one pilot.
