Venture capital giant Accel secures $3.5 billion across four new funds, focusing on early-stage global AI startups and deep tech.

Accel, a global venture capital firm, just raised $3.5 billion across four new funds. These funds are specifically for early-stage investments in emerging AI startups globally. This move reflects AI companies raising more capital earlier in their development.

Fund Breakdown

  • Global expansion fund: $1.35 billion for larger early-stage rounds and follow-on investments.
  • US investments (primarily Silicon Valley): $800 million.
  • Europe and Israel deployment: $800 million.
  • India investments: $550 million.

Harry Nelis, an Accel partner in London, noted significant AI sector opportunities, alongside increased risk from larger investment amounts. The new India fund is slightly smaller than its predecessor, while European and US funds increased from $650 million to $800 million.

Investment Strategy

Steve Loughlin, a San Francisco Bay Area-based partner, highlighted Accel’s expanded focus beyond AI-native startups. They now include deep tech sectors like material science and manufacturing, believing AI can revolutionize complex industries.

  • Accel’s portfolio includes a $300 million seed round in Periodic Labs.
  • Periodic Labs is an AI scientific discovery platform, valued at $1.3 billion.
  • Other notable AI startups: Thinking Machines Lab (co-founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati), and Safe Superintelligence Inc. (co-founded by former OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever).

Loughlin emphasized that while billion-dollar seed deals exist, most early-stage investments aim for meaningful ownership. Accel’s global footprint helps AI entrepreneurs with international expansion, leveraging Indian engineering or engaging founders in Israel.
