The Indian equities market closed higher on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, with the Nifty 50 advancing +0.54% to settle at 22450.50 points. Leading the charge among the top gainers was Reliance Industries, which climbed +3.45% to ₹2850, underscoring strength in the Energy sector. The Auto sector also showed robust performance, with Tata Motors gaining +2.11% and Maruti Suzuki rising +2.56%. The IT sector contributed significantly to the upside, seeing Wipro jump +2.36%, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) up +2.07%, and LTIMindtree adding +1.27%. Financial stocks also found favour, with HDFC Bank increasing +1.89%, Bajaj Finance up +1.35%, and ICICI Bank advancing +1.43%. Rounding out the top performers, Sun Pharmaceutical posted a +2.56% gain. The gains were fairly spread across key sectors, with IT, Auto, and Banking/NBFC each having multiple representatives among the top ten.
On the flip side, several prominent stocks faced selling pressure. The IT sector, despite some gains, also saw significant declines, with Infosys emerging as the biggest loser, dropping -2.49% to ₹1490. Tech Mahindra also ended in the red, down -0.98%. Banking stocks experienced a mixed day, as State Bank of India fell -2.24% and Axis Bank declined -1.42%. The FMCG sector witnessed corrections in Hindustan Unilever, which shed -1.85%, and Dabur India, down -1.28%. Power sector stocks NTPC (-1.64%) and Power Grid Corp (-1.20%) also featured among the top losers. Additionally, ONGC from the Energy sector lost -1.46%, and Coal India from Mining was down -1.10%. The day’s trading suggests a nuanced market sentiment, with investors selectively rotating capital across and within sectors rather than a broad-based directional move.
