Valvoline partners with Mahindra Racing in Formula E to develop advanced lubricants for India’s roads, aiming for double-digit market share.
Valvoline is strategically leveraging its Formula E partnership with Mahindra Racing, directly translating track data into advanced lubricants for India’s diverse road vehicles. This crucial technological exchange underpins Valvoline Cummins Private Limited’s ambitious goal of securing a double-digit market share in the Indian automotive sector.
Formed in 1998 as a 50:50 joint venture between Valvoline and Cummins, Valvoline Cummins Private Limited has already established a significant presence. The company’s revenue surpassed Rs 2,300 crore by the mid-2020s, driven by a diversified portfolio.

- Revenue (mid-2020s): Over Rs 2,300 crore
- Market Share Goal: Double-digit
The collaboration with Mahindra Racing in Formula E extends beyond traditional sponsorship, functioning as a direct channel for fluid engineering advancements. Data gathered from the extreme conditions of Formula E circuits, including intense heat, significant electrical loads, and high mechanical stress, is directly integrated into Valvoline’s development processes.
These valuable insights are then adapted to create advanced lubricants specifically for Mahindra’s road vehicles and the broader Indian commercial and passenger fleet. Sandeep Kalia, Managing Director of Valvoline Cummins Private Limited, stated that the partnership is fundamentally about co-developing fluids to create superior vehicles.
Strategic Partnership Fuels Product Innovation
Kalia highlighted that tailor-made transmission fluids developed for Mahindra’s E-Prix cars have directly contributed to the team’s podium finishes in races like Monaco and Tokyo since March 2026. This performance demonstrates the fluids’ exceptional ability to withstand extreme heat, a critical factor for both racing and demanding road conditions.
Beyond the technological exchange, the expanded agreement also strengthens commercial ties, with Valvoline serving as a significant supplier of Mahindra’s aftermarket lubricants. These offerings include engine, transmission, and axle oils marketed under the Maximile brand.
Commercial Expansion and Future Outlook
The partnership further incorporates sustainability initiatives, notably the use of recycled packaging for Valvoline products. Kalia expressed strong confidence that the investments made in developing fluid technology for racing cars, and subsequently for Indian road vehicles, will yield substantial long-term benefits.
This strategic foresight mirrors Valvoline’s earlier entry into the electric vehicle segment decades before its widespread adoption, positioning the company for continued relevance and growth in evolving automotive landscapes.
