Pune’s ‘MH-12 1A’: India’s First Digit-Letter Vehicle Series Proposed
By ThePip Desk
Pune RTO proposes India’s first digit-letter vehicle series ‘MH-12 1A’ to manage registration exhaustion and maintain city identity. Temporary ‘MH-61’ for festive season.
Pune’s Regional Transport Office (RTO) has advanced a proposal for a new vehicle registration format, “MH-12 1A.” This initiative aims to allow the city to maintain its distinctive “MH-12” identity as the current series approaches its final “ZZ” sequence.
If approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), this would establish India’s inaugural digit-letter vehicle registration series. The proposal directly addresses the exhaustion of existing registration combinations within the established system.
Addressing Registration Exhaustion
The current MH-12 series is nearing its complete exhaustion, having reached the final “ZZ” sequence. This necessitates a new approach to accommodate Pune’s expanding vehicle population and ensure a continuous supply of registration numbers.
To prevent immediate delays, especially with the upcoming festive season, a temporary measure has been put in place. New vehicles purchased in Pune will temporarily receive the MH-61 code.
Temporary Measures and Future Transfers
This temporary assignment will continue until the proposed MH-12 1A series receives official authorization and is fully implemented. Vehicle owners who obtain these temporary registrations will have the option to transfer to the new MH-12 series later.
This transfer would be available for a nominal fee once the new format becomes effective. The temporary switch initially sparked concerns among Pune residents about potentially losing their city’s established identity.
Ministerial Intervention and Public Feedback
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, directly addressed these concerns with Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. Minister Gadkari responded favorably to the request to preserve Pune’s MH-12 identity, leading to the formulation of this innovative digit-letter proposal.
The next stage involves a draft notification from the authorities, which will invite public feedback and suggestions. This critical step precedes the official finalization of the new registration format, ensuring community input.
The proposed system is designed to ensure Pune retains its familiar vehicle identity while simultaneously providing the RTO with a sufficient supply of new registration numbers. This mechanism supports the city’s increasing vehicle population effectively.
