India’s EV Exports Soar, Europe Leads Demand
By Business Desk
India’s electric car exports surged to 10,802 units and $369M in Q1 2026-27, with Europe, especially Spain and the UK, becoming the top destination.
India’s electric motor car exports saw a significant surge in the first quarter of 2026-27, with Europe establishing itself as the primary destination for these shipments.
Total export earnings sharply rose to USD 369 million from USD 22.2 million a year earlier, while vehicle shipments jumped from 1,309 units to 10,802 vehicles.
The European Market’s Growing Demand
This substantial growth underscores the increasing global acceptance of India-manufactured electric vehicles (EVs) and solidifies the country’s position as a significant production hub for sustainable mobility solutions.
Spain emerged as the largest individual market within Europe, importing 4,007 electric vehicles valued at USD 146.4 million.
These figures represent nearly 40% of India’s total EV exports by both value and volume in this category.
The United Kingdom followed as the second-largest market, recording imports worth USD 78.7 million and 2,646 vehicles.
This marks a substantial increase from almost negligible shipments in the corresponding quarter of the previous year, indicating deeper penetration of Indian-made electric cars into a developed European EV market.
Beyond these leading countries, several other European economies also demonstrated robust growth in imports of Indian electric vehicles.
Germany imported vehicles valued at USD 25.1 million, while Norway accounted for USD 21.1 million.
Denmark’s imports stood at USD 21 million, and Belgium registered USD 12.9 million in purchases.
Further contributions came from the Netherlands (USD 12 million), Greece (USD 3.8 million), Italy (USD 2.7 million), Sweden (USD 2.1 million), and Poland (USD 1.6 million).
Diversifying India’s Export Footprint
This broad European engagement highlights the increasing relevance of Indian manufacturers in global EV supply chains and signals a rising demand for affordable electric mobility solutions.
India also expanded its export reach beyond the European continent, making notable inroads into Asia-Pacific markets.
Key destinations included Japan (USD 13.4 million), Israel (USD 2.8 million), Australia (USD 2.7 million), Singapore (USD 1.7 million), Taiwan (USD 1.3 million), and South Korea.
Additionally, new opportunities materialized in Latin America, with exports directed to Brazil (USD 2.4 million), Colombia (USD 1 million), Chile (USD 0.4 million), and Costa Rica (USD 0.5 million).
While traditional markets like Nepal maintained their importance, this strategic diversification towards advanced European and other international markets signifies a crucial shift in India’s EV export profile.
It underscores the improving quality, enhanced safety standards, and growing global competitiveness of Indian electric vehicle manufacturing.
