Escorts Kubota Targets Top 3 Tractor Spot in India by 2030
By Business Desk
Escorts Kubota invests ₹2,000 crore in a new Jewar plant, aiming for a top-three tractor market position in India by 2030 with new products and expanded capacity.
Escorts Kubota aims to become one of India’s top three tractor manufacturers by 2030, signaling a significant strategic play in the agricultural machinery sector. This ambitious target is underpinned by a substantial investment exceeding ₹2,000 crore for a new manufacturing facility in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh.
Key Strategic Numbers
- ₹2,000 crore: Investment in new Jewar manufacturing facility.
- 9.5%: Midterm Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) projected for Indian operations by Kubota Corporation.
- 40+: New products introduced across Farmtrac, Powertrac, and Kubota brands.
- 5%: Current contribution of exports to Escorts Kubota’s total sales.
- 60,000: Initial annual tractor production capacity at the Jewar plant.
- 15,000: Initial annual construction equipment production capacity at Jewar.
- 170,000: Existing annual tractor manufacturing capacity.
- 10,000: Existing annual construction equipment manufacturing capacity.
- 70-75%: Current utilization rate of existing manufacturing capacity.
Expanding Manufacturing & Market Share
Currently ranked fourth in the Indian tractor market, Escorts Kubota is clearly focused on climbing the ranks. The company trails established players such as Mahindra, TAFE, and Sonalika, making this a direct challenge to the industry’s incumbents.
Kubota Corporation, holding a 54% stake in Escorts Kubota Limited, views India as a critical future growth engine. This perspective is reinforced by the projected 9.5% midterm CAGR for its Indian operations, which stands as the highest within its global portfolio.
Product Innovation and Global Ambition
Product development has been a core focus, with over 40 new offerings launched recently across its Farmtrac, Powertrac, and Kubota brands. These innovations have contributed to a consistent month-on-month increase in market share, indicating positive reception.
Beyond domestic expansion, Kubota intends to transform India into a global hub for manufacturing, procurement, and engineering. This strategic shift will see exports commence from India to North America by the end of next year, followed by expansion into markets across Africa, ASEAN, and Latin America.
Funding the Future
Funding for the new Jewar factory will be secured through a combination of a preferential share issue to Kubota Corporation and the company’s internal accruals. The initial phase of this facility is designed to establish significant production capacities for both tractors and construction equipment.
Specifically, the Jewar plant will initially produce 60,000 tractors and 15,000 construction equipment units annually, alongside necessary supporting infrastructure. This adds substantial capacity to the existing 170,000 tractors and 10,000 construction equipment units per annum, which currently operate at a 70-75% utilization rate.
Escorts Kubota’s aggressive investment and expansion strategy positions India not merely as a key market, but as a pivotal global manufacturing and export base for the Japanese conglomerate. This move suggests a deeper integration of India into Kubota’s worldwide operational framework.
