Indian Markets Dip: Sensex, Nifty Fall Amid Geopolitical Fears
By ThePip Desk
Indian stock markets, Sensex and Nifty, decline due to rising crude oil prices, geopolitical tensions, and FII outflows. ICRA projects slower Q1 FY27 GDP growth.
Indian markets commenced Tuesday with a negative bias, as the Sensex traded at 77448.01, down by 0.36%, and the Nifty registered 24228.50, a decline of 0.24%.
This downturn was primarily influenced by the persistent surge in crude oil prices, which fueled global inflation and interest-rate anxieties. Heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, following Iran’s rejection of talks with the U.S. regarding a ceasefire extension, further contributed to market cautiousness.
- Sensex: 77448.01, down 280.15 points or 0.36%
- Nifty: 24228.50, down 0.24%
- FII Outflows (August 17): Rs 2,535.10 crore
Adding to domestic concerns, rating agency ICRA projected India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth for the April-June quarter (Q1 FY27) at a four-quarter low of 7%. This marks a decrease from the 7.8% recorded in the March quarter of FY26, attributed to a slower expansion rate in the services sector.
- India Q1 FY27 GDP (ICRA Estimate): 7%
- Industrial Sector Projection: 7.7%
- Agriculture Sector Projection: 4%
- Services Sector Projection: 7.9%
Global Economic Headwinds
Asian markets largely mirrored a weaker Wall Street performance overnight, contributing to the overall subdued sentiment. China’s economy notably lost momentum in July, with key indicators showing a slowdown in consumer spending and industrial activity.
- China Retail Sales (July Y-o-Y): 0.6%
- Previous Month (June) Growth: 1%
