Indian Equities Flat Amid Global Headwinds & Oil Surge
By Market Desk
Indian stock markets trade flat as US-Iran tensions and rising crude oil prices weigh on sentiment. Global indices also show a negative trend.
Indian equities concluded Tuesday’s trading session flat, reflecting a cautious sentiment influenced by weak global cues. Escalating tensions between the US and Iran, alongside a notable surge in crude oil prices, contributed to the subdued market performance.
The GIFT Nifty indicated a negative opening for the Nifty 50, trading down 40.30 points at 24,055. Both the NSE Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex registered marginal declines, aligning with the broader global trend.
Global Market Dynamics
Across international markets, US and European index futures traded lower during Asian hours. The US market experienced a downturn, with the S&P 500 falling 0.7%, the Nasdaq 100 dropping 1.3%, and the Dow declining 0.8%.
This decline was attributed to renewed US-Iran tensions and increased expectations of a September rate hike by the Federal Reserve, following Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s recent speech. Asian stocks also saw a decrease, with MSCI’s Asia Pacific index down 1%, driven by rising oil prices pushing bond yields higher and concerns over inflation leading to tighter monetary policy.
Commodity Price Movements
Oil prices continued their upward trajectory for a third consecutive session. Brent crude traded above $95 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate neared $91, fueled by fears of supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Conversely, gold prices declined, trading around $4,330 an ounce. This downturn was a reaction to Middle East attacks and a global bond selloff, which collectively strengthened bets on a potential Federal Reserve rate hike.
Key Corporate Developments
Several companies reported significant news. Wipro announced an extended engagement with ABB, while Adani Green Energy successfully commissioned a new solar project. Gland Pharma received a zero-observation inspection outcome from the USFDA, signaling positive regulatory compliance.
Coal India also featured in the news, reporting an increase in its coal allocation. These individual corporate actions provided specific stock-level insights amidst the broader market movements.
