By ThePip DeskIndian Equities Fall as Brent Crude Surges on Geopolitical Fears

Indian equity markets decline as Brent crude prices surge above $91/barrel amid geopolitical tensions and FII outflows, impacting Sensex and Nifty.

Indian equity benchmarks traded lower in morning deals, with the Sensex declining 282.10 points, as Brent crude prices surged above $91 a barrel. This downturn was primarily fueled by concerns over inflation and energy costs.

Traders adopted a cautious stance, influenced by several key factors impacting market sentiment.

  • Brent crude prices climbed above $91 a barrel.
  • Fading prospects of an extension to the US-Iran ceasefire raised inflation and energy cost concerns.
  • Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) net sold equities worth Rs 2,535.10 crore on Monday.

Both the Sensex and Nifty remained under pressure, with the Nifty falling below the 24,250 mark during early trading. Losses in Realty, TECK, and IT stocks weighed heavily on the indices.

  • Sensex currently at 77446.06, down by 0.36%.
  • 9 stocks advanced against 21 stocks declining on the index.

Sectoral Performance Overview

Sectoral indices on the BSE exhibited varied performances, highlighting specific areas of market strength and weakness.

  • Top gaining sectors: Utilities (up 0.63%), Energy (up 0.51%), Oil & Gas (up 0.39%), Healthcare (up 0.37%), Auto (up 0.22%).
  • Top losing sectors: Realty (down 1.08%), TECK (down 1.06%), IT (down 0.93%), Consumer Durables (down 0.59%), FMCG (down 0.42%).

Index Heavyweights Under Pressure

Key constituents of the Sensex also mirrored the broader market’s mixed trend, with significant movements observed across several major companies.

  • Top Sensex gainers: Mahindra & Mahindra (up 0.48%), NTPC (up 0.42%), Sun Pharma (up 0.37%), Bajaj Finance (up 0.29%), Axis Bank (up 0.26%).
  • Top Sensex losers: Asian Paints (down 1.69%), Infosys (down 1.62%), Bharti Airtel (down 1.32%), Hindustan Unilever (down 1.25%), Interglobe Aviation (down 1.21%).

Despite the market’s decline, some economic indicators presented a mixed picture, which traders largely overlooked. Rating agency ICRA estimated India’s GDP growth at a four-quarter low of 7 percent for the April-June quarter, a decrease from 7.8 percent in the March quarter of FY26, attributed to slower services sector expansion.

Conversely, the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) by the National Statistics Office (NSO) reported an overall unemployment rate among persons aged 15 years and above declined to 5.1 percent in July 2026, down from 5.5 percent in the previous month. Globally, Asian markets largely traded in the red, influenced by persistent oil price increases and uncertainties surrounding a diplomatic resolution for the Strait of Hormuz.

Electronics Manufacturing Boost

Separately, the Indian government approved 31 new proposals under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS). These projects represent investments worth Rs 7,877 crore.

These approvals bring the total number of cleared projects across five tranches to 106, with cumulative investments now exceeding Rs 69,000 crore. The focus areas include capital goods, camera modules, display modules, connectors, and anode materials.
