India Onion Supply Secure: Robust Production Ensures Availability

The Indian government has affirmed sufficient onion availability to meet domestic demand in the coming months. This assurance stems from robust production figures and strategic buffer stock management.

• Estimated 2025-26 production: 307.37 lakh metric tonnes (LMT)
• Previous year’s production: 307.67 LMT
• 2026-27 rabi onion procurement target for buffer: 2 LMT
• Buffer stock already purchased: 1.21 LMT via NAFED and NCCF
• Subsidized retail sale price: Rs 35 per kg
• Exports April-June 2026: 3.82 LMT to Malaysia, Sri Lanka, UAE, Nepal

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution noted that buffer stocks and targeted market interventions are crucial. These measures aim to moderate seasonal price pressures, which typically peak during festive and wedding seasons due to increased demand.

Strategic Buffer Releases

To counteract potential price surges, the government initiated calibrated releases from its onion buffer stock. Supplies are moving to major consumption centers nationwide through a hybrid logistics model.

• Railway rakes, including the ‘Kanda Express’ from Nashik to New Delhi
• Road transport to cities such as Chennai, Kolkata, and Lucknow

The retail sale of buffer onions at a subsidized rate of Rs 35 per kg will launch through mobile vans and retail outlets. These include NCCF, NAFED, Safal, and Kendriya Bhandar, initially covering a significant number of points.

The Department of Consumer Affairs continuously monitors daily prices of 41 essential commodities across 579 centers. This oversight informs the scale and destinations for buffer stock releases.

Beyond onions, the government reported stable prices for other essential vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes. Key pulses also show stability, with some even recording prices lower than the previous year.
