Gold, Silver Prices Dip on MCX Amidst Weak Indian Demand
By Market Desk
Indian gold and silver futures on MCX experienced a decline on August 19 due to weak domestic spot demand and profit-taking, contrasting with global precious metal gains.
Indian gold and silver prices fell in futures trade on August 19, driven by weak domestic spot demand and position-cutting. This decline occurred despite gains in global precious metals, highlighting distinct local market pressures.
MCX Futures See Significant Drops
- October gold futures on MCX dropped by Rs 636, or 0.41%, settling at Rs 1.53 lakh per 10 grams.
- September silver futures fell by Rs 4,023, or 1.73%, reaching Rs 2.28 lakh per kg.
The immediate downward pressure on domestic gold stemmed from subdued spot demand, indicating reduced buying interest from consumers. Silver’s sharper decline was attributed to investors actively reducing their positions, reflecting its higher sensitivity to market sentiment and industrial expectations.
Globally, the trend diverged, with New York gold futures rising by 0.10% to approximately $4,338.74 an ounce. Silver also saw gains, increasing by 0.99% to $62.74 an ounce, confirming that India’s price fall was not part of a broader international sell-off.
Gaurav Garg, Head of Research at Lemonn, noted that international gold prices showed recovery, supported by easing US Treasury yields. However, he cautioned that investors remained watchful for the US Federal Reserve meeting minutes, seeking insights into future interest rate directions. Lower rates typically enhance gold’s appeal by reducing the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets.
Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst at LKP Securities, highlighted that geopolitical uncertainties provide underlying support for gold. He observed an initial dip of about Rs 1,000 before gold recovered, influenced by a complex mix of factors.
Factors Shaping Gold’s Trajectory
- Higher crude prices are contributing to market caution.
- Ongoing uncertainty following the conclusion of the US-Iran MOU without new talks.
- The Strait of Hormuz remains a significant geopolitical flashpoint.
Trivedi added that markets will closely monitor the FOMC meeting minutes, upcoming US jobs data, and crude oil movements for further direction. He anticipates continued volatility in gold prices as geopolitical developments sway safe-haven demand.
The price decline does not signal waning interest among Indian consumers, according to Kaushlendra Sinha, CEO of the Indian Association for Gold Excellence and Standards. Instead, buyers are adjusting strategies in response to elevated prices.
Indian Consumer Shifts in Gold Acquisition
- Consumers maintain a strong affinity for gold, but increasingly opt for lightweight and trendy jewelry.
- Some households are choosing to exchange or redesign existing jewelry, leveraging their current holdings rather than new purchases.
As the festive and wedding season approaches, domestic demand is expected to play a crucial role in price determination. Nevertheless, the overall outlook for gold and silver will also be shaped by global economic indicators and ongoing geopolitical developments, ensuring continued market attention.
