Welspun Corp Surges: Nifty 500 Gainers Defy Market Turmoil
By ThePip Desk
Discover how Welspun Corp and other Nifty 500 stocks achieved double-digit gains despite rising oil prices, geopolitical tensions, and market volatility.
Welspun Corp., Jyoti CNC Automation, and Welspun Living spearheaded a group of nearly a dozen Nifty 500 stocks that registered double-digit gains this week.
These significant individual stock performances occurred even as the broader market contended with pressure from escalating energy prices, global bond market turmoil, and persistent geopolitical uncertainty.
Global Headwinds Weigh on Broader Market
Crude oil prices reached a one-month high, driven by growing tensions in the Middle East and anticipated sweeping U.S. sanctions on Iran set for next week.
- Global bond yields climbed to multi-decade highs as investors demanded increased compensation amidst concerns over inflation and rising government debt levels.
- The Nifty 50 extended its losing streak to seven consecutive sessions through Wednesday, marking its longest such run in 11 months.
Rising oil prices reignited inflation concerns, a particular vulnerability for India, which imports approximately 85% of its crude oil requirements.
These external pressures overshadowed better-than-expected June-quarter earnings, as domestic investors appeared to shift focus from large-cap stocks, with mutual fund data for July indicating continued interest in mid-cap and small-cap funds.
Top Nifty 500 Performers Defy Sentiment
Defying the prevailing weak market sentiment, Welspun Corp shares surged 23.4% this week, closing at ₹2,311.
- Jyoti CNC Automation delivered a similar gain of 20%.
- Balrampur Chini Mills rose 16.7%, bolstered by a rally in sugar prices.
- Welspun Living also recorded a 15.3% increase following a record order win.
Other stocks, including Aegis Logistics, Netweb Technologies, Ipca Laboratories, Prime Focus, Leela Palaces Hotels, Urban Company, and CarTrade Tech, concluded the week with gains exceeding 10%.
Outlook: Volatility Persists Amid External Factors
Ajit Mishra, SVP – Research at Religare Broking, stated that the market is likely to remain volatile in the near term.
- Geopolitical uncertainty, elevated crude oil prices, and global bond yields will continue to influence investor sentiment.
- Domestic economic fundamentals remain supportive, but external factors are expected to have a greater bearing on Indian equities.
Mishra advised investors to maintain a selective approach, focusing on companies with strong earnings visibility, healthy balance sheets, sustainable cash flows, and improving relative strength.
He noted that sectors such as banking, financial services, infrastructure, capital goods, defence, metals, and select healthcare stocks appear relatively better positioned. Caution is warranted in sectors vulnerable to higher crude prices and global demand uncertainty.
Given the prevailing volatility, traders should avoid aggressively chasing prices and instead use meaningful declines to gradually accumulate.
