Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman embarks on a Canada-US tour (Aug 25-Sep 2, 2026) to attract global investments and strengthen economic ties.
India’s Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, will undertake a significant visit to Canada and the United States from August 25 to September 2, 2026. The primary objective of this tour is to actively engage global investors and corporate leaders, aiming to attract new investments into India.
This diplomatic initiative seeks to bolster bilateral economic partnerships with both nations, broaden investment avenues, and advance collaborative efforts on critical global priorities. The itinerary is structured to maximize interaction with key stakeholders across various major cities.
Targeting Investment and Dialogue in the United States
Sitharaman’s engagements in the United States will commence on August 28, with planned stops in Chicago, Asheville in North Carolina, and New York. A central event will be her leadership of the Indian delegation at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting.
This crucial G20 meeting, scheduled from August 31 to September 1 in Asheville, will serve as a platform to address global economic and financial challenges, particularly in light of ongoing geopolitical conflicts. She will also participate in investor roundtables in Chicago and New York.
During these roundtables, the Finance Minister will underscore India’s robust economic growth and highlight its attractive investment landscape. A visit to the University of Chicago is also slated to foster discussions on entrepreneurship, innovation, and strengthening connections with India’s burgeoning startup ecosystem.
The United States holds a pivotal economic relationship with India, standing as its largest goods trade partner after China. It also ranks as the third-largest source of foreign direct investment, with bilateral trade exceeding $140 billion in the last fiscal year.
Strengthening Economic Ties in Canada
Prior to her US engagements, Sitharaman will visit Toronto for the inaugural Economic and Financial Dialogue with Canada’s Minister of Finance and National Revenue, Francois-Philippe Champagne. This dialogue is designed to facilitate extensive discussions on macroeconomic trends, financial sector collaboration, and mutual investment prospects.
Additionally, the Finance Minister is scheduled to meet with prominent Canadian investors and industrialists. These discussions will specifically focus on attracting investment into key sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals.
The overarching goal of this extensive tour is to solidify India’s position as a preferred investment destination and deepen its strategic economic partnerships across North America.
