Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to undertake a significant official visit to Canada and the United States, scheduled from August 25 to September 2, 2026. This extensive tour aims to strengthen bilateral economic ties, explore new investment opportunities, and foster global financial cooperation.
The Ministry of Finance officially announced the itinerary, which includes high-level engagements across multiple cities. The visit underscores India’s proactive approach to international economic diplomacy and its commitment to enhancing its global financial footprint.
Canada: Bilateral Economic Dialogue and Investment Focus
The Canadian leg of the trip will commence in Toronto, featuring the inaugural Economic and Financial Dialogue. Here, Minister Sitharaman will meet with Canadian Finance Minister and National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne to discuss a broad range of economic subjects.

These interactions are designed to cultivate business-to-business linkages and pinpoint long-term commercial partnerships, including those within India’s GIFT City-IFSC.
Furthering financial sector collaboration, she will attend a business roundtable alongside Canadian business leaders and senior managing directors from Indian public sector banks. Individual meetings with Canadian company executives are also planned, focusing on India’s growth potential and opportunities for Canadian businesses to expand their presence.
United States: G20 Leadership and Innovation Engagements
The US portion of the visit, spanning August 28 to September 2, will include stops in Chicago, Asheville, and New York. In Chicago, Minister Sitharaman will conduct roundtables and individual meetings with investors and private-sector executives.
She will also visit the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago. Discussions here will center on entrepreneurship, technology commercialization, and India’s burgeoning startup ecosystem, highlighting opportunities for collaboration and learning.
Following Chicago, the Finance Minister will proceed to Asheville, North Carolina, from August 31 to September 1, to lead India’s delegation at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meeting. This crucial gathering, held under the US G20 presidency, will address vital topics concerning global economic growth and stability.
