SEBI Chief: Stronger Governance Needed for India’s Growing Mutual Funds
By Business Desk
SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey calls for enhanced governance in India’s mutual fund industry as its investor base rapidly expands and diversifies, especially from smaller towns.
SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey recently urged the mutual fund industry to strengthen its governance and oversight mechanisms. This call comes as the sector experiences a significant expansion in its investor base, diversifying beyond traditional segments.
Pandey delivered his remarks at the 31st foundation day of the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) in Mumbai. He highlighted the critical role mutual funds play in directing household savings into the productive economy, thereby contributing to India’s overall growth.
Adapting to a Diversifying Investor Landscape
The Chairman underscored that the increasing scale and complexity of the industry necessitate greater responsibility from fund managers and stakeholders. He emphasized the fiduciary duty associated with managing public money, particularly as new demographics enter the market.
Pandey stated that the next phase of growth for the mutual fund sector would largely involve investors from **smaller towns**, **first-time participants**, and **under-represented segments**. This shift demands an evolution in product offerings, distribution strategies, and communication methods from the industry.
Prioritizing Trust and Accessibility for New Investors
AMFI Chairman Sundeep Sikka reinforced these observations, noting the challenge of fostering a disciplined and long-term investment culture across a broader section of the country. This includes building confidence among these new and underserved investor groups effectively.
AMFI Chief Executive Venkat N. Chalasani added that **simplicity**, **accessibility**, and **trust** are paramount for mutual funds to become truly relevant to every household. He advocated for investment solutions that are straightforward, easily reachable, trustworthy, and aligned with everyday financial needs. Chalasani also acknowledged the crucial role of distributors in expanding the industry’s reach, while cautioning that growth must not compromise responsible conduct.
