SEBI Digital Onboarding for NRIs: Easier Indian Investments
By Business Desk
SEBI proposes a fully digital onboarding process for NRIs, simplifying Indian market investments. Zerodha’s Nithin Kamath hails it as a major step for overseas investors.
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has introduced a proposal for a fully digital onboarding system, aiming to streamline the investment process for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
This initiative is designed to significantly reduce the time and effort NRIs currently face when opening investment accounts in Indian markets.
Zerodha co-founder Nithin Kamath lauded the move, calling it a significant step towards removing a primary obstacle for overseas investors.
He highlighted that this change could shorten the account-opening duration from several weeks or months to just a few days.
Enhancing Investment Appeal for India
Kamath underscored the critical role of NRIs as a source of long-term capital for Indian equities.
He noted that easier access would not only benefit these individual investors but also contribute to the broader Indian economy.
- Attracting more NRI capital to Indian markets.
- Strengthening the Indian rupee.
- Enhancing the country’s overall investment appeal.
The Mechanism of Digital Streamlining
Previously, a major challenge for NRIs was the requirement for physical presence in India to open an investment account, despite other regulatory simplifications.
The latest consultation paper from SEBI directly addresses this by enabling e-signatures to be completed from the client’s country of residence.
This eliminates the need for extensive physical documentation and reliance on international courier services, making the process more efficient and accessible.
